What to Wear to Your First Rave (From Someone Who’s Been There)
What to Wear to Your First Rave (From Someone Who’s Been There)
by iRaveBabe®
So you’re going to your first rave.
First of all… welcome! You’re about to have one of the best nights of your life, even if you have no idea what to wear yet and you're spiraling through Pinterest at 2 AM. Been there.
I remember my first rave - I wore this random Forever 21 bralette, a pair of black high-waisted shorts, fishnets, and absolutely zero sense of what I was doing. Halfway through the night I realized three things:
-
I was freezing.
-
I couldn’t stop adjusting my outfit.
-
Everyone around me looked like walking holographic demigods.
So here’s the guide I wish someone gave me before I committed crimes against fashion and my own comfort. Let’s get you rave-ready.
the vibe is comfort & self-expression
Raves are weird because they’re somehow both the most comfortable and the most extra spaces on earth at the same time. You’ll see everything from girls in sparkly bikinis to people in giant onesies to dudes in banana costumes. The beauty of rave fashion is that it’s expressive and weird and honestly kind of unhinged in the best way. But if it’s your first time, here are the basics that almost everyone ends up wearing:
Comfortable shoes? Check.
Something breathable? Check.
Something you can dance in for 6 hours straight? Definitely check.
You don’t have to reinvent yourself. Just build from what feels like “you,” but a little more extra. You want an outfit you can dance in, sweat in, get hugged by 20 strangers in, sprint to the rail in, and survive a freezing 3 AM walk back to your car in. But also something that feels so you that when you look back at photos later you’re like:
“That was my villain era.”
tops (aka the easy part)
Most girls end up going with bralettes, bikini tops, or cute little crop tops. A lot of people layer mesh over their tops because it adds texture and looks really good in photos. If you’re a girl who needs support: sports bra + a cute top over it is extremely common and nobody will look twice.
The real rule is this: if it already annoys you when you try it on at home, it will ruin your night. Don’t do that to yourself.

bottoms (where the fun starts)
High-waisted shorts are everywhere because they’re flattering on literally every body type and they stay put. Mini skirts are super cute, but please wear booty shorts under them unless you’re committed to flashing half the rave (no judgment). Bodysuits and rompers are also super popular because they’re one-piece and you don’t have to adjust them constantly. If you’re worried about chafing, bodysuits are your best friend.
If you like showing skin, go for it. If you’re more comfy covered, totally normal. There's no “right way” to dress at a rave.
Some of my favorites we just dropped:

pashminas (i’m going on a rant)
Pashminas are literally the god tier rave accessory. Nobody tells first-timers this, but everyone deep in the scene carries one. If I could go back to my first rave and change one thing, it wouldn’t be my outfit or my makeup - it would be bringing a pashmina. A pashmina is basically a soft, decorative scarf, but ravers treat it like a survival tool.
Here’s why they’re god tier:
-
They’re unisex, everyone can share
-
They also double as a social signal (people compliment pashminas constantly and it’s a great way to meet people)
-
You can sit on it (grass, dirt, concrete, whatever)
-
It’s warm at night
-
It blocks dust
-
It becomes shade
-
It looks amazing in photos
-
It’s basically a wearable hug
You can layer it however you want:
-
around your neck
-
over your shoulders
-
tied like a hood
-
draped down your back
-
tied around your waist like a sash
I’m telling you right now, it is worth having one. You will never regret having one of these on you.

shoes (don’t be a hero)
If you take nothing else from this article, please take this: Wear sneakers. Real ones. Already broken in. Not sandals, not boots you bought yesterday, not the cute little platform heels that “aren’t that bad”, nothing you can’t walk a mile in. This is where newbies ruin their night, festival grounds are huge. You’ll hit your 10,000 steps before you even realize it. Sneakers, period.
Your feet are going to war. Treat them accordingly.
accessories (the fun part)
Accessories take an outfit from “cute” to “okay she did not come to play.” A fanny pack or crossbody bag is a must. Don’t bring a purse. You need something hands-free that zips and stays in front of you. Trust me. Fanny packs are honestly the secret sauce for rave outfits - they’re super functional, and they pull everything together to make you look way more “put together” than you actually feel.
Sunglasses are basically required for outdoor festivals. If you want to go full rave nerd, get diffraction glasses (the ones that turn stage lights into rainbows). They’re fun for like three minutes and then you’re usually like “omg this is too much” but worth trying.
Things you’ll see everywhere:
Chain belts (seriously, look up how good they look with skirts), kandi, sunglasses, harnesses, body chains, chokers, leg wraps, mini backpacks / fanny packs
Some stuff we just dropped:
Headbanger Neon X Vinyl Pasties

iRaveBabe® Classic Logo Beanie

check the weather
If you’re at an outdoor rave, the temperature drop hits HARD around 1–3 AM. Everyone looks cute until they’re shivering like chihuahuas. That pashmina I mentioned? Yeah, this is when it becomes your best friend. If it’s indoors, you can go lighter. People usually end up sweating no matter what.
Check the weather before you finalize your outfit.
safety stuff nobody talks about
Not to sound like a mom, but this matters more than the fit.
Bring: earplugs, a portable charger, your ID, emergency $20 cash, gum, and blister bandaids.
-
Keep your bag zipped and in front of you.
-
Hydrate.
-
Know your group’s meetup point.
- Narcan (not necessary but you never know when you or someone near you may need it)
You don’t have to be paranoid - just prepared. It makes the whole night easier. You’ll thank yourself later.
a few outfit ideas if you’re still blanking
Sometimes you just need a starting point, so here are a few:
The “I want to look cute but chill” fit:
Black bralette, high-waisted shorts, mesh long sleeve, sneakers, a pashmina, and done.
The reflective baddie:
Reflective bodysuit, chain belt, space buns, glitter, pashmina, sneakers. You will look like a futuristic warrior angel.
Fairycore sweetheart:
Pastel mesh top, shimmer skirt, soft accessories, light pashmina.
Perfect for daytime sets.
wear whatever makes you feel like you
If you’re nervous: totally normal.
If you’re excited: that’s the sign you’re about to enter your raver era.
If you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing: you’re already one of us :)
Your first rave isn’t about looking perfect, it’s about feeling free. Wear something that moves with you, something that feels like a version of yourself you’ve always wanted to show the world. Don’t stress it too much. Once the music hits, you’re not going to care if your top matches your eyeliner.
But if you want to feel confident and cute and part of the culture, the pieces we’re making here at iRaveBabe are designed exactly for that - by ravers who get it. If you see me out there, come say hi. I’ll be the one with the cute pashmina and a hydration pack like a responsible chaotic queen :)
See you under the lights! ✨
Okay, so your outfit is locked in… but what do you actually do once you’re inside the rave? I got you. Here’s your next step: 10 things you MUST do at your first rave.
